Misfire Defined
An engine misfire is the term applied to failure of the combustion process to complete in a cylinder. When this happens, you'll likely experience a loss of power, delay in acceleration, or a noticeable stutter of the engine. Although this is not a comforting feeling, it's important to know that nearly every engine will misfire at some point. It's a problem that needs correcting, but it isn't unusual or unique to your transportation.
Potential Causes of Misfires
Various underlying causes can account for engine misfires. For example, bad fuel injectors that are clogged or leaky can starve your engine of fuel as can low fuel pressure. The improper fuel-air ratio can lead to misfiring. Another concern is a problem with the ignition system. Aged spark plugs or frayed wires and damaged ignition coils may prevent the spark needed to initiate combustion. If your engine's piston rings are worn, a valve is stuck, or the head gasket leaks, low compression can lead to misfiring. Your car may also have a vacuum leak such as a hole in a hose or intake manifold. The entrance of extra air can ruin that important air-fuel ratio. A loose or worn timing belt/chain prevents proper timing of valves opening/closing and pistons working, also potentially leading to misfiring. Finally, a malfunctioning engine control unit (ECU) or mass airflow sensor is a common misfire trigger. Regardless of what is causing the misfire, it's important to correct it immediately before significant damage occurs.
